Aerosol Warfare brings in some old school, out-of-town talent

Aerosol Warfare went back to basics and out of town for its latest exhibit “X=(ATX)3.” The show features the work of Sloke 1, Spain 1 and Mez, three Austin graffiti artists who kick it old school. “The decision was based on going back to our roots a little bit,” says AW curator and local graffiti legend Gonzo247. He and co-founder Christian Azul started the gallery to showcase graffiti artists, then expanded to all forms of street art. “But I think people still need to be exposed to the true element,” Gonzo247 says, explaining that the term “graffiti” is used to define all street art instead of just that involving a wall and a can of spray paint. Sloke, Spain and Mez have caught the eye of a wide audience during their more-than-ten-year reign on the streets of Austin. They’ve all honed their ability to bend, twist and manipulate the letters from chosen monikers in a variety of colors, as well as add an interesting array of accompanying characters including mobsters, monsters and more. See how they do it in the ATX from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays to Saturdays. Through August 23. Aerosol Warfare Gallery, 2110 Jefferson. For information, visit www.myspace.com/aerosolwarfare. Free.
Tuesdays-Saturdays, 2-9 p.m. Starts: July 26. Continues through Aug. 23, 2008
