    Houston Press is hosting its inaugural Artopia event on Saturday, January 24, 2009 at the Winter Street Studios (2101 Winter Street, Houston). Join us from 8 p.m. - 11 p.m. when we bring together a stimulation of the senses in the form of visual art, performing art, live music and fashion. Artopia highlights Houstons diverse artists, musicians, fashion designers, culinary masters and cocktail creators. The Press will also give out its first annual MasterMind Awards --grants of $2,000 each -- to three local innovative artists and organizations in a ceremony beginning at 8:30 p.m. General admission tickets: $35 donation and are inclusive of complimentary food, wine, cocktail, and beer sampling. VIP tickets are also available for a $75 donation (only 50 available) and include complimentary valet and access to an exclusive VIP lounge. All guests must be 21+. Re-envision Japanese traditional music (hogaku) in a contemporary context. Two exciting interpreters take the contemporary music scene by storm. The 4-member Hayashi Ensemble Fuji-Zakura, led by Harumi Mochizuki, breathes new life to music originally performed to accompany Noh theater. The Passion of Asia with Tetsuro Kawashima on tenor saxophone and Etsuko Takezawa on koto (zither) blends jazz and hogaku through versatile improvisation. Co-presented by Asia Society Texas Center, the Consulate-General of Japan in Houston, Japan Foundation and Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. This new attraction features the music of the great brass past-like Earth, Wind, and Fire and Tower of Power-alongside the hottest contemporary hip hop and R&B music. The stirring sound of trumpets, explosive choreography, and incredible feats of athleticism from the "steppers" and dancers will bring the audience to its feet.
